Hot dogs sold nationwide may contain harmful bone fragments

It is time to check your refrigerator for a specific brand of hot dogs. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, hot dogs made by Marathon Enterprises known as Sabrett frankfurters may contain bone fragments. One person already suffered an oral injury from the pieces of bone and ligaments, and the company issued a recall of the products.

These shards can cause severe damage when all you want to do is enjoy an old-fashioned hot dog. Before you fire up the grill, make sure you keep reading for more information about the recall.

Recall details

This recall involves over seven million pounds of hot dogs made from beef or pork. The contamination may affect other sausage products as well. While multiple consumers complained about bone fragments, there is only one report of injury so far. This USDA recall is a Class 1 recall. This means that the meat in question poses a health hazard with a likelihood of causing serious health consequences or even death.

What to look for

The manufacturer sold the hot dogs in question to various retailers and institutions. According to the USDA, most of the sold franks and sausages were under the Sabrett name. Here are the warning signs you should not eat your hot dogs:

  • They have a production date from March 17, 2017 to July 4, 2017
  • They have a sell-by date from June 19, 2017 to October 6, 2017
  • The packaging has the establishment number "EST. 8854" within the USDA inspection mark

If your franks meet any of these conditions, you should return them to the store you bought them from or simply throw them out.

This situation shows that injuries from food contamination are possible and widespread nationwide. If you consumed these products and sustained an injury or illness, you may want to consider your legal options. Otherwise, just throw out any hot dogs that match the details above and stay safe.
